A little about Shala Napier - Co-Founder
My father was an Engineer and my mother a
stay-at-home mom. She has a passion for sewing and
loves to cook.
My Dad influenced me on the technical side, and I used
this background in the high tech industry, managing
technical sales and business development in corporate
America.
I got my creative side from my Mom, who taught me
how to sew, and to appreciate arts and crafts. This led
me to minor in Art and Design while attending college
in England.
Another great influence in my life was my Emmy
Award-winner brother, who was an Art Director for
Hanna-Barbara, where they produced many successful
cartoon series including The Yogi Bear Show, The
Flinstones, Scooby-Doo and The Jetsons. I was fortunate
to have been able to work there for a summer after
college among many creative artists.
Supporting, creating and appreciating art is something
that has always been part of my life, and I encourage
my two children to be creative in their daily lives
within the community and at school.
Carey and I are very fortunate that our paths came
together and we are able to focus our creativity and
ideas on this business. Getting to know Carey and her
work has been wonderful for both of us.
A little about Carey Sperry - Founder & Designer
Yes, my name rhymes. And as I tell everyone – my husband
did that to my name, not my parents!
Sewing, quilting and craft are to me a daily source of
inspiration and expression.
I learned to sew by watching and hearing my mother and
grandmother’s humming machines, while they stitched
away. The middle school I attended, in Michigan, offered
Home Economics, where I made my first pillows, in the
shape of my three initials.
Shortly after having my own children (now 10 and 5), my
mother gave me a used Singer. I became interested in
creating things for the nursery. I developed my own
patterns & designs for family and friends. From there I
branched out into quilting, with a focus on contemporary
designs.
People ask us how the Whimsy Dusey name came into
being. Whimsy is short for Whimsical. Dusey means high
quality, old fashioned. While creating our first line of
handbags, our first several customers enjoyed how they
expressed a spirit of fun. Our fabrics, all new, are chosen
by having some sort of a vintage signature. Everything is
made 100% by hand.
Shala and I met through working together in corporate
America and when our lives aligned to where we could fully
devote our time and energy we partnered in Whimsy Dusey,
early in the year 2007. While collaborating continually,
Shala focuses on marketing/business development and
development of our web site while I oversee production,
create new lines, and select fabrics that speak of our past
times.
We are blessed to be working together every day to bring to
our customers body wear items through which they can
express their own style, personality and sentiment.
